Dear Friends,

With the news this week about the murdered gay men in the Toronto area, we decided our PFLAG community should hold a Vigil of Hope to remember them and others who have experienced violence because of their gender identity.

We invite you to join us on Friday, February 16 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. at Oasis United Church, 2964 Skaha Lake Road, Penticton.

As part of the evening, we will walk the labyrinth holding candles. The labyrinth is a pathway taped to the floor of the Great Room. This ancient tool will help us center ourselves as we join our hope-filled hearts.

If the above options do not exist in your area, you can also get a test at your local hospital emergency. This may not be the most desirable location, but is is a service that is available - even if it's not an emergency. They also have PEP available if you believe you have been infected with HIV within the last 72hrs - which is an emergency, as PEP (not PrEP) can be used after exposure to HIV.

Set against majestic images of the infinite expanses of the Canadian Prairies, the film features Spoon crooning about their queer and musical coming of age. Interviews, performances and music sequences reveal Spoon’s inspiring process of building a life of their own, as a trans person and as a musician.

Official selection at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival.

This screening kindly provided by the National Film Board of Canada

Stuart Park to Waterfront Park

Get your rainbow brights ready and join Okanagan Pride Society as we march together and shine our Pride along Kelowna’s waterfront...it’s the biggest celebration of the whole week.

Due to this year’s unprecedented lake levels, we have a slightly new route but an AMAZING new destination—it all still starts at Stuart Park, but we’ll head north along the boardwalk, ending in beautiful Waterfront Park, with its grassy amphitheatre, floating stage and some trees for shade (“Can I get an Amen?)!

10:30am - Marshalling begins at Stuart Park. Wear any color of the rainbow or get your friend to dress-up as a “team”. Pride flags will be available for purchase (cash only). Interested in being an official flag-bearer? Apply now: goo.gl/forms/ZLl8AavniB6juPdn2

11am - Our feet start moving and the cheering begins as we make our way to Waterfront Park.

11:30 - Festivities in Waterfront Park kick into full gear.

What’s in store at the Festival in the Park?

> Main Stage: A non-stop roster of performers. Stay tuned for details.

> 40+ vendors: Food trucks, community groups and local business owners. Buy some goods, nosh on some eats and learn about great groups in your community.

> Pooches on Parade: An annual crowd-pleaser where our canine friends show off their Okanagan Pride. (Get your pooch registered now: goo.gl/forms/zYZjhBnPZx9jEqW83).

> Beer Garden: Quench your thirst on some lager, cider or our exclusive Pride Wine on what’s historically a hot-hot Okanagan day. $5 cash entry to the beer garden.

> For kids (or nimble adults): A bouncy castle, an inflatable obstacle course and a jousting arena = a whole lotta F-U-N.

> Mass wedding (2pm): For any queer or ally couples who want to get hitched! (Advance registration before August 15 required, see: www.facebook.com/events/1741083809242124/)

2017 OYP Sugarplum Ball

2017 OYP Sugarplum Ball

Jul 29, 7:00pm - Jul 29, 11:59pm

Rotary Centre for the Arts
421 Cawston Ave
Kelowna, BC  V1Y 6Z1 Map

An Evening for Everyone

500 of Kelowna's most influential and diverse people * Live entertainment * Aerial performances * Kelowna's top drag performers * Celebrity transformations * Unique themed party rooms

How it Got Started
In 2015, the Mayor of Kelowna received the title 'Mayor Sugarplum' after approving the painting of a rainbow crosswalk to represent our city's inclusive and diverse community. From this the idea for the Sugarplum Ball was born; an event to celebrate and embrace LGBT2Q+, minorities and other marginalized groups in our community.

2016 marked the inaugural Sugarplum Ball, an event that was planned as a one-time celebration. After its success in selling out to 400 young (and young at heart) guests its future as an annual event was solidified. Last year's event was the first of its kind in the Okanagan - multiple parties, a drag runway featuring the Mayor and local celebrities, and most importantly an atmosphere of inclusivity.

One Community
The OYP is dedicated to creating a vibrant and flourishing environment for young professionals to call home. The Sugarplum Ball is about highlighting the Okanagan as an inclusive and welcoming place to all, regardless of sexual orientation, race, religion or gender. This is a community that celebrates our diversity.

Making Headlines
In 2016 the Sugarplum Ball made international headlines and over three million web impressions as a progressive and inclusive event. As a room sponsor (only three available) you will receive the opportunity to align your brand with the Sugarplum Ball, be recognized in all our marketing promotions (print, web and social media) along with your logo and branding on all photos taken in the photo booth of that room.

Keep your eyes open for the announcements on tickets, we will announce through the OYP newsletter with our VIP early bird tickets.

His 6th and current tour, DISCOFILTH, which began in the US in April and ends in September in the UK, represents "Pride and PLUR: Peace, Love, Unity, Respect for everyone who lets it all go on the dance floor."

He has been nominated for both Grammy and Juno awards, writes and produces both original material for himself and for other artists, and is "totally thrilled and humbled" to return to LeVel and Okanagan Pride

Embassy DJ - First introduced to music on a professional level in the early 2000's, starting originally as a hip hop artist and progressing into music production and eventually learning the craft of Dj'ing. Pride Rally & March

Aug 13, 11:00am - Aug 13, 11:30am

Stuart Park
Kelowna, BC  V1Y 1J1 Map

Arguably one of the most important and most magical moments during any pride celebration in any city. The Pride Rally & March is when we all come together and show our city who we are! This is a time when everyone who identifies as a member of our community and all of our amazing allies come together in solidarity and strength to bring the power of our community to life. We have come so far but with the recent tragedy in Orlando, we are reminded that we still have so far to go. This is why it’s so important to take opportunities like our march to show the world that we are here and we are strong. Bring your family, friends, voices, your rainbow colours, and advocacy signs to Stuart Park for marshalling by 10:45 at the latest. The march will start at 11:00 am with Grand Marshals, MP Stephen Fuhr and the Etcetera Youth Group. We will follow the lakeshore path to the North Field in City Park for the opening of Festival at the Beach.

We will have small Pride flags to hand out on a first- come, first- served basis, but if you have your own flags please bring them.

No commercial banners or signs please. Team t-shirts are okay.

Trans March & Social

Trans March & Social

Aug 9, 6:00pm - Aug 9, 9:00pm

The Laurel Packing House
1304 Ellis Street
Kelowna, BC  V1Y 1Z8 Map

Last year we were blown away by the incredible turnout for this important event! Over 200 members of our community came out to support our Trans family and we are ecstatic that we are able to make this an annual event. The Trans community has been in the global spotlight this year which has stimulated a lot of very important conversations and progress. This is the perfect opportunity to celebrate how far we’ve come and, with your love and support, show the world where we plan to go! Meet at the Sails on Bernard and Abbott at 5:45 pm for a 6:00 pm march along the lakeshore path to Water Street & Cawston Ave, then follow Cawston Ave to the Laurel Packinghouse. We will host a reception with refreshments and entertainment at the Laurel Packinghouse. This is a free event for all ages. Look for the pink, blue, and white Trans flags.

Quanah Style is one of Canada’s most infamous trans artists. One part fearless ClubKid and another part powerhouse musician. Ms. Style has blazed a trail from coast to coast. From Vancouver to Toronto she has garnered attention and there are few dancefloors which haven't felt her presence. From her outfits and makeup to her music and show stopping performances, Quanah Style has proven she is a force to be reckoned with and we are so excited to have her performing at this year's Trans event.

We’ve heard that the Etcetera Youth Group has been preparing a special performance for us! Can’t wait to see what they have planned.

The OYP Sugarplum Ball

The OYP Sugarplum Ball

Jul 9, 8:00pm

Rotary Centre for the Arts
421 Cawston Ave
Kelowna, BC  V1Y 6Z1 Map

When life gives you lemons, make Sugarplum!

When Colin Basran, the Mayor of Kelowna, was referred to as "Mayor Sugarplum" in a negative comment in response to the new rainbow crossing (Lawrence Avenue & Pandosy Street) he reacted the only way he knew how: by uniting our community. Instead of clashing and arguing, Mayor Basran and Okanagan Young Professionals have decided that the best way to promote unity & inclusiveness would be through an evening for everyone! What do we mean by that? Obviously, throw the best party of the year, with proceeds going to support the Okanagan Pride Society. And this is how the Sugarplum Ball was born.

An Evening For Everyone, hosted by Mayor "Sugarplum" Basran!

The night has come, and you are ready for an unforgettable time...
Start out backstage at the RCA while enjoying, beer, cocktails, cider and wine from amazing local artisan producers, slip into the drag boutique for a chance to get your makeup dialled up, stop by the wig bar let your hair down and head into the Electric Circus Atrium for an epic party. While on the subject, please make sure to wear your finest dancing shoes because our DJ’s will not let you sit for a moment!

Tickets can be purchased online via the link above or roll on down to the Rotary Centre for the Arts during regular business hours to purchase.

$30 - VIP Early Bird - Limited Tickets (SOLD OUT)
$35 - Early Bird - 100 Tickets (SOLD OUT)
$40 - Regular advance rate
$50 - Day of the event (if any tickets remain)

What Should I Wear?
Evening gowns or jeans, with 3 party zones, choosing to dress ordinary or extraordinary, is made easy! Come with your beautiful make up on, or allow our professional makeup artist surprise you (by donation)! Be yourself and dress however you feel!

Is This a Pride Event?
This is an Okanagan Young Professionals event that happens to promote unity and community through a collaboration with the The Okanagan Pride society.

Do I have to come in drag?
Not at all! You are definitely welcome to try, but rumour has it that Jason Richards might be shaving his legs for this one, so good luck competing with that!

Kelowna City Park Beach Map

All Day Entertainment with Vendor Fair & Beer Garden, & Pooches on Parade

What a better backdrop to the festival than the hot beaches and sparkling Lake Okanagan surrounded by orchards and vineyards. Kelowna is known for its perfect summer weather, amazing local wines, fabulous dining, and tons of outdoor activities. Our Festival in the Park features a refreshing Beer Garden and there is just nothing better on a hot summer day by the lake. This year’s entertainment is sure to be fun and inspiring.

Entertainment

Headliner: Bec & Sebastian

Bec & Sebastian: We’re delighted to announce the headliners for the 2015 Okanagan Pride Festival! It is twins Bec and Sebastian coming to Kelowna all the way from Melbourne, Australia! They will be performing not one, but two sets at the Festival on the Beach at the TD stage on August 15 in the beautiful setting of City Park.

Despite always having been inseparable, Melbourne based twins Bec & Sebastian only began performing and writing together a short time ago. A casual recording session with Bec on backing vocals for a new song Sebastian had written and produced led the siblings to realize the unique sound they created together was something they had to further explore.

Country Singer Patrick Masse

Patrick Masse: From Vancouver to Nashville this crooner’s country boy charm and classic yet uptempo sound is redefining contemporary country music. Raised amongst a brood of six siblings by two nurturing parents, Patrick has never been one to let anything hold him back. Patrick’s songs have international radio airplay, he has been nominated for the Ray MacAuley Memorial “Horizon” BCCMA Award and has earned the friendship and respect of his peers from Carolyn Dawn Johnson to Ward Stout and many others.

Sista B and the BoyzSista B & the Boyz: This local Kelowna band is back for the festival due to popular demand! Sista B will be sure to get the crowd energized with her amazing vocals and uplifting music.

Seating

There is room for a few hundred people on the bleachers in front of the stage. There will be tables and chairs in the beer garden area as well.

Pooches on Parade

Dec 6, 2:00pm - Dec 6, 4:00pm

Okanagan Pride is partnering with Kelowna Community Resources to sponsor a family this holiday season! We have been matched with a same sex female couple (both 22 years of age) with a three year old son.

You are invited to purchase new items to gift to this family. The online gift register lists items on the wish list for each of the three family members. If you would like to purchase one of the suggested items please add your name beside the item in the online register so we know someone is getting it and then go out and purchase the item at a local store. You may also gift cash by paying online which will be used to purchase grocery store gift cards. Once you have purchased your non-cash gift bring it to an afternoon social from 2 pm to 4 pm on December 6 at Clarance House B&B for a wrapping party (gift bags and wrap will be provided). The gifts will then be dropped off at Kelowna Community Resources for distribution to the family.

Brief description of the family’s current situation: This family was recently married, so they are working on building their home together.

If you have any questions please email info@okanaganpride.com.

Candle lighting ceremony, screening of two short films, followed by a discussion.

Films: Transmormon (2013) and “BOY” (2014)

The Transgender Day of Remembrance is observed in late November in recognition of the 1998 murder of Rita Hester. Rita was a highly visible member of the transgender community in Boston, where she worked locally on education around transgender issues. Sixteen years later, police have still not found Rita’s murderer (or murderers).

In 1999, advocate and writer Gwendolyn Ann Smith coordinated a vigil in Rita’s honor. The vigil commemorated not only Rita, but all who were tragically lost to anti transgender violence.

Aug 10, 7:00pm

Alternator Center for the Arts
103-421 Cawston Ave
Kelowna, BC  V1Y 6Z1 Map

The Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art is pleased to present Intersections, an exhibition of six artists in the LGBTQ* (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, queer and other) community. Intersections is presented in conjunction with the 2013 Okanagan Pride Festival in Kelowna, BC.

Taking place in the Members’ Gallery at the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art, Intersections offers a chance to share with one another the intricacies of our own personal journeys, the paths we have already taken and the experiences still to come. For artists Daniel Oledzki, Jacklyn Harris, Deneige Nadeau, Kevin Michael Witzke, Shannon Lester and Dean Krawchuk, the mileage varies. The poetic work of Deneige Nadeau, a recent graduate of Emily Carr University of Art + Design, engages snippets of theoretical text with photographs of her own body; while Daniel Eric Oledzki explores the areas where media, gender and capitalism overlap.

The Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art welcomes you to visit our space between August 10th and 17th to view the exhibition. Please join us for a reception and official Okanagan Pride 2013 opening event on Saturday, August 10th at 7:00 pm at the Alternator Centre. This is a free public event. Lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spamalot has had audiences all around the world roaring with laughter since it won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2005.

Telling the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of The Round Table and featuring a bevy of beautiful show girls, not to mention cows, killer rabbits and French people, Monty Python’s Spamalot “raises silliness to an art form” (The Sunday Times) and has been hailed as a “no holds barred smash hit” (The New Yorker).

It tells the story of three unlikely friends who conspire to take control of their company and learn there's nothing they can't do -- even in a man's world.

Outrageous, thought-provoking and even romantic, it’s about teaming up and taking care of business...it's about getting credit and getting even.

9 to 5, the movie was a hit, grossing over $3.9 million in its opening weekend in the U.S. and is the 20th highest-grossing comedy film ever.

Songs Include 9 to 5, Backwoods Barbie, Let Love Grow, Here For You, Get Out & Stay Out and many more!
