sugar plum ball 2016

Skip the ordinary and join the extraordinary as the Okanagan Young Professionals Collective brings our community together in support of Okanagan Pride and unity for us all, with one heck of a party.

Kevin Lavigne has been nominated and accepted the challenge of transforming into a glamorous drag queen in training, known as “Mandy Beechbank” for the 1st annual Sugarplum Ball. The first of 5 available spots has been filled. Over the next week the nominations and confirmations will reveal a star studded cast of an additional 4 celebrities. Each having the pleasure of professional makeup and fittings for our finest of local proud celebrities.  Watch the Facebook Event page for details on our celebrity announcements.

“When City Council made the right decision to paint rainbow crosswalks downtown, an intolerant resident of our community took to online forums and would refer to me as ‘Mayor Sugarplum’. Little did this person know that while they thought they were insulting me, I actually found it quite humorous and I was kind of flattered! My friends from the Okanagan Pride Society thought we could have some fun with it and with that, the Sugarplum Ball was born!” Mayor Sugarplum Basran posted this as a Facebook update. Mayor Basran is a strong advocate of diversity and inclusion and is why he was named the Grand Marshall for the 2015 Okanagan Pride Rally & March.

This event promises to bring our community together like never before in a celebration with multiple rooms, multiple parties, multiple bars and multiple outfits. Start out back stage at the Rotary Centre for the Arts while enjoying beer, cocktails, cider and wine from local artisan producers, slip into the green room for a chance to have your look transformed by skilled professionals continuing on to the rest of the party with a fresh set of lashes and wig. Proceeds from the event go to support Okanagan Pride Society.

“Okanagan Pride Society’s theme this year, We Are One, ties in with this event as well as with the unity shown across the world after the Pule shooting in Orlando.  As our community and it’s allies come together to show unity, support and love, we promise to not let those lives be lost in vain.” says OPS President, Sydney Lawson, “We will continue to work towards education, tolerance, acceptance and equality. We will celebrate and honour all lives regardless of their sexual orientation, gender, race or religion because all lives matter.”
